Yesterday, I had the opportunity to speak with R.J. Scaringe, CEO of the newest entry to the automotive industry, Rivian Automotive. His company, based in Rockledge, FL, will soon release a vehicle that can achieve upwards of 60 MPG without needing new infrastructure like electric vehicles would. As future models are produced Rivian will introduce a hybrid diesel engine that could achieve 90 MPG in the city and over 100 MPG on the highway.
In addition to the great specs that Scaringe gives about the future vehicles, he is doing something that many car manufacturers wouldn't think of, he is employing people. The vehicle that the company has created is a fool proof assembly car and instead of costly robotics to assemble them, Rivian is looking to employee hundreds of highly trained unemployed workers. The influx of skilled talent to the for-hire pool is thanks to the recent closing of the NASA shuttle program as well as a stressed economy. The reduction of costly robotics and utilization of manual labor will allow for the company to keep their super efficient luxury sports car in the mid $20 to $30,000 price range.
Scaringe, an enthusiast himself, not only seeks to revolutionize the automotive industry, but to create an iconic car that has an appeal like no other. Rivian recently added renowned designer Peter Stevens (designer of the McLaran F1) to an already elite team to ensure that the debut model will not only stand apart from any competition, but be unmistakably Rivian in any lineup.
So, get ready world, Rivian is gearing up to change the game and from what I've heard the better!
